Google acquires gesture recognition firm Flutter

Today Google has bought out Flutter, an emerging gesture recognition startup that relies on gestures caught by your webcam to control various applications on your computer.

The acquisition opens up some interesting possibilities in the realm of mobile development for Android, as well as Google Glass.

Flutter can control numerous programs for both Windows and Mac, including Netflix and YouTube through its new Chrome extension. You simply hold up your hand within sight of your webcam.

Apple has officially introduced its updated iMac PCs, which now features the latest generation Intel quad-core processors, new graphics, new Wi-Fi receivers and faster storage options.

The 21.5-inch entry-level iMac now comes with a 2.7 GHz quad-core Intel i5 processor and a new Iris Pro GPU. The top end 21.5-inch model and both 27-inch variants sports Intel i5 processors that are clocked at 3.4 GHz, NVIDIA GeForce 700 series graphics and 40% faster performance over the previous generation.

Google Chrome 30 brings image search for desktop and new gestures for Android

Google released an update for its Chrome web browser. The latest iteration of the popular application, dubbed Chrome 30 brings a few neat changes to the desktop and the version for Android devices.

Chrome users for Android will have three new gestures at their disposal. They include swiping horizontally across the top toolbar to switch tabs, dragging down from the toolbar to access the tab switching UI, as well as dragging down from the menu to open it and make a selection without lifting a finger.

Windows 8 adoption continues to rise as XP falls

Adoption of Microsoft’s Windows 8 operating system has not been without its share of speedbumps, but it continues to rise according to the latest web traffic figures from Net Applications.

The latest Windows version comes in at just over 8%, mainly eating into Windows XP’s share, which currently stands at 31.41%.

Neither, however, can eclipse the lion’s share of the pie, currently owned by Windows 7 at 46.43%. This number has steadily grown over the past months, up from 44.4% back in July. This is likely due to Windows XP upgraders choosing the previous, more consistent Windows version.

Dropbox for Windows and Mac now automatically uploads your screenshots

Dropbox has added a new feature to its Windows and Mac application, which makes sharing screenshots a lot easier. Now when you take a screenshot, it will automatically be uploaded to your Dropbox account.

All you have to do is take a screenshot (Print Screen on Windows and CMD+Shift+3 on OS X) and the file will automatically be uploaded to your Dropbox account. On OS X it also automatically copies a link to the file in your clipboard so you can paste it immediately for sharing and on Windows you will have to hold Ctrl while pressing Print Screen to get the URL.
